Devotional: Do You Love Me? A Call Beyond Words
Welcome to Today’s Devotional, Focusing on: John 21:17
Today’s Scripture:
17: “He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep”John 21:17.
The risen Jesus stands by the shore of Galilee — a fire crackling, the morning light dancing on the water. Peter, the one who once declared undying loyalty yet denied Him three times, now finds himself face-to-face with the Lord again.
But instead of condemnation, Jesus offers a question that cuts deeper than any rebuke:
“Do you love Me?”
“This is no casual inquiry. It’s a soul-piercing question, repeated three times, echoing the three denials. Each repetition peels back another layer of Peter’s heart — his shame, his pride, his assumptions about love.”
“And with every “Do you love Me?” Jesus isn’t seeking information; He already knows Peter’s heart. Instead, He’s offering transformation.”
Love That Demands a Response
In Greek, the nuance of Jesus’ question is revealing. Twice He asks if Peter loves Him with agape — the selfless, sacrificial love of God. Peter responds with phileo — a brotherly, affectionate love. On the third time, Jesus meets Peter where he is, using phileo too.
It’s as if Christ says, “I know your love isn’t perfect, but I can still use it.”
Then comes the charge: “Feed My sheep.” Love for Christ cannot remain a mere emotion or private confession. True love overflows into action—it becomes care, guidance, service, and sacrifice for others.
Love doesn’t stop at confession—it continues in compassion.
From Failure to Faithfulness
Peter’s story mirrors our own. We too have moments of failure—times when fear silences our witness, when self-interest overshadows devotion, when our lips profess love but our lives contradict it. Yet Jesus does not discard us. Instead, He calls us again—not to wallow in guilt but to rise into purpose.
The man who once faltered would go on to shepherd the early church, write letters that still strengthen believers today, and ultimately give his life for Christ.
This transformation wasn’t born of shame—it was fueled by love. A love that moved from words to work, from regret to responsibility.
🕊️ Key Line: Love doesn’t erase our past—it redeems it.
Practical Proof: Feeding the Sheep
How do we, in our modern lives, feed His sheep? The “sheep” are those in the Church, the lost, the struggling, and the weary. This command is a powerful metaphor for tangible, practical action.
- Sharing Spiritual Nourishment (The Word)
- In your life: Are you equipping a younger believer with a helpful book?
Explaining a difficult scripture to your child?
Inviting a colleague to a Bible study?
➤ That’s feeding a sheep.
- Showing Compassionate Care (The Deed)
- In your life: Does “feeding” look like bringing a meal to a grieving family?
Sitting with a lonely senior?
Mentoring a troubled youth?
➤ When you invest time, energy, and love into another person, you are feeding His sheep.
Just as a shepherd provides fresh grass, we offer spiritual food through the truth of the Gospel. Paul embodied this when he poured his life into the churches he established, guiding them through doctrine and daily life.
Jesus didn’t just tell Peter to preach—He told him to feed. This implies nurturing, protecting, and tending to practical needs.
Dorcas (Acts 9:36–43) modeled this through her acts of generosity, making garments for the poor—a profound example of feeding the sheep through compassionate deeds.
Our past failures become the very soil from which empathy and ministry grow.
Jesus’ question still echoes through the centuries and lands gently on our hearts:
“Do you love Me?”
How is He asking you that question today—and how will you respond?
Prayer for Today.
O gracious Lord and Shepherd of our souls,
We thank Thee for Thy tender call that echoes through the ages: “Lovest thou Me?” Forgive us when our love hath grown faint and our zeal hath waned. Kindle within us a holy fire that we may love Thee with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength.
Teach us, to feed Thy sheep with gentleness and grace—to nourish the hungry with Thy Word, to comfort the weary with Thy mercy, and to serve the least of these as unto Thee.
Make our love steadfast, not in speech alone, but in deed and truth. And when we falter, remind us that Thy mercy endureth forever.
Use our hands for Thy work, our words for Thy witness, and our hearts for Thy glory. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever..
Amen.
It’s a call that demands more than an answer; it calls for a lifestyle.
And the good news is this: no matter how far you’ve fallen, no matter how weak your love may feel—He can use it. He can redeem it. And through you, He can feed His sheep.
