Devotional: They Shouted “Hosanna”… Days Later, They Shouted Something Else

Watch Online
Welcome to Today’s Devotional, Focusing on: Matthew 21:8-9.

Today’s Scripture:

8: “And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way.

9: And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.”
Matthew 21:8-9 (KJV).

In every culture, people know how to celebrate someone great—a returning hero, a beloved leader, even a celebrity. We roll out red carpets. We throw confetti. We post, cheer, and follow.

But on that dusty road to Jerusalem, something different happened. There were no trumpets, no royal banners—only a Messiah on a donkey, cloaks underfoot, and cries of “Hosanna!” ringing through the air.

It’s known as the Triumphal Entry. But Jesus didn’t ride a warhorse. He chose a donkey—a symbol of peace and humility. And yet, the crowd still called Him “Son of David,” their words echoing with prophecy and passion. They laid down cloaks and branches in His path—a royal welcome not from the elite, but from the hearts of ordinary people.

But here’s the tension:
Just a few days later, the cheers turned into jeers.
"Hosanna" became "Crucify Him."

And in that heartbreaking shift, we see something painfully familiar—how quickly our passion can fade when God’s ways don’t align with our expectations.

What Do We Lay Down?

Laying down a cloak was more than a gesture. In biblical times, your cloak represented identity, protection, even social status. When someone placed it beneath the feet of Jesus, they were offering something deeply personal.

Today, our “cloaks” may not be fabric, but they still wrap around our hearts. Pride. Fear. Control. Reputation. Plans. Preferences. Laying them down says: “I trust You more than I trust myself.

The Hidden Hosanna

The truth? We love Jesus as Savior. But we hesitate to follow Him as King.

We sing _“Hosanna”_ in worship.
But we hesitate when His kingship challenges our comfort, our calendars, our carefully curated lives.

Sometimes, the most conflicted crowd isn’t around us—it’s within us.
The inner voices that praise in the morning but question by nightfall.
The faith that’s loud in celebration but quiet in sacrifice.

Faith is not measured in moments. It’s formed in movement—steady, daily surrender.

Worship is more than a feeling. It’s obedience when no one is watching. It’s trust when answers are delayed. It’s love when the cost feels real.

Faith Is More Than a Flash Mob

That crowd on the road to Jerusalem was electric—like a flash mob of worship, spontaneous and passionate. But faith isn’t measured in moments. It’s formed in movements—steady, daily surrender. Worship is more than a feeling. It’s obedience when no one is watching.

Just like that road into Jerusalem, we’re invited to prepare a path in our lives. A path paved not with palms and cloaks, but with:

  • honesty in the workplace,
  • grace in the family tension,
  • peace in anxious scrolling,
  • and courage when the cost of discipleship feels heavy.

This is the Hosanna life: one where we welcome Jesus not just with our lips, but with our living.

Scripture is Full of People Who Laid Something Down:

  • Zacchaeus climbed a tree, but surrendered wealth and reputation.
  • Mary of Bethany poured perfume—costly worship in a room full of critics.
  • The widow gave two coins—small in value, massive in trust.

And today?

  • A teenager chooses integrity over popularity.
  • A parent prays, even when weary.
  • A business owner chooses ethics over shortcuts.
  • A friend forgives, even when it hurts.

These are our modern palm branches.
These are the roads we build for Him to enter our lives.

Let Him Ride In—Even When It’s Hard

Sometimes, it’s easy to shout _“Hosanna!”_ when life is going well—when blessings overflow and prayers are answered.
But what about when the path is unclear?
When God is silent longer than we hoped?
When following Jesus costs us more than we expected?

That’s when _faith becomes more than a parade.
That’s when worship becomes perseverance.

Because Jesus doesn’t just deserve our praise in moments of joy.
He is worthy even when the road leads to a cross before it leads to a crown.

The Road to the Cross Still Runs Through Praise

The road to Jerusalem was paved with celebration, but it led to a cross before it ever led to a crown.
That’s the shape of discipleship: joy and sacrifice, worship and surrender.

So let’s be people who don’t just cry “Hosanna” in the crowd—but who live it out in quiet corners of everyday life. People who make room, lay things down, and trust Him to ride in, even if He comes in humility.

Let your life be the road He rides into your world today.

Prayer for today

O Lord our King,

We lift our voices to Thee in praise, even as we lay our hearts low in surrender. Thou art worthy of every cloak we cast down, every crown we remove, every part of our lives we yield to Thy Lordship. Hosanna to Thee, Son of David—blessed art Thou who comest in the name of the Lord.

Forgive us, O God, when our lips have cried Hosanna while our hearts have withheld the throne. Forgive us when we have welcomed Thee in joy, yet resisted Thee in truth. Teach us to walk the narrow road—the royal road—that leads not only to the gates of Jerusalem, but to the foot of the cross and beyond, into the glory of Thy resurrection.

Grant us the grace to lay down our pride, our plans, our fears, and all that we would cling to, that nothing may hinder Thy reign in us. Reign in our homes, in our thoughts, in our work, in our words. Ride into the hidden places, and make of our lives a temple for Thy glory.

Strengthen us to follow Thee not only in the crowd, but in the quiet. Not only in the song, but in the sacrifice. Let our faith be more than a moment—make it a movement toward Thee, ever nearer to Thine heart.

We give Thee all, for Thou hast given all.
And we say again, with all our soul:

Hosanna in the highest.

Amen.
